About me
My training
I completed my Masters degree in Psychology at Stellenbosch university. During this time I was exposed to different modalities and ways of understanding human behaviour. I practised psychotherapy under the supervision of experienced psychoanytically informed psychologists, as well as clinicians specialising in CBT.
Work Experience
I worked at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, Alexandra Hospital (for persons diagnosed with both mental disorders and intellectual disability) and at Groote Schuur Hospital’s Psychiatric Outpatient Department. It was during this time that I gained an appreciation and working knowledge of CBT and Mindfulness-Based Interventions.
I was employed as a Clinical Psychologist at the Department of Health at Khayelitsha hospital. Here I worked closely with other healthcare professionals as well as NGOs and other community-based services. I was often confronted with the problematic context and social problems of patients and their often traumatic experiences. The psychological treatment of mental health disorders are complicated by problematic social environments and poverty, and the stigma that surrounds mental health. Personally, this highlighted the importance of thinking systemically, as we are all impacted by our direct and broader environments and relationships. I worked with patients with psychiatric diagnoses, mood disorders, post-traumatic experiences, bereavement, as well as relationship and identity issues.
Private Practice
My private practice is based in Gardens, Cape Town. I see adolescent and adult clients with a range of mental health challenges. I am also able to refer to a network of other professionals, if that is indicated. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are unsure, or would like some more information.
Community work
I am part of the team running the Banghoek Care Centre in the Drakenstein Valley. This non-profit company aims to provide mental health services to individuals working and living in the surrounding area. This project, in participation with Stellenbosch University, recognises the importance of creating access to counselling and psychological services, which this community has typically and historically lacked.
